Queen Elizabeth II died, aged 96 on September 8th, 2022. As part of her funeral arrangements, Her Majesty will lie in state until her burial in Windsor alongside her parents and husband, Prince Philip.
In preparation for Charles’s accession to the throne and the funeral of the Queen, a carefully choreographed schedule has already been put in place.
When is the Queen’s Funeral?
Queen Elizabeth’s II’s funeral is confirmed for 11am on Monday 19th September. It has been confirmed that the day will be a Bank Holiday. The public will be able to view the coffin 24 hours a day from 5pm on Wednesday 14 September until 6.30am on Monday 19 September.
It is likely that those who wish to attend will have to queue for many hours, possibly overnight. People are advised to check ahead, plan accordingly, and be prepared for long waits.
Where will the funeral be held?
The Queen’s funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey unlike Prince Philip’s, which was held at Windsor Castle. At midday, a national two-minute silence will be held.
There will be procession in both London and Windsor, followed by a committal service at St George’s Chapel.
Will the funeral be televised?
Yes, the funeral will be televised on all major TV channels. Princess Diana’s funeral in 1997 remains the most-watched live televised event of all time.
Where in London can I go to pay respects?
A sea of flowers already surrounds Buckingham Palace. Every 12 hours, floral tributes will be removed and placed in a memorial area at Green Park. Flowers can also be laid directly at these sites by members of the public.
Those who mourn may also leave flowers at Windsor castle, which has been a Royal residence for many years, just outside of London. In the evenings, tributes will be brought inside the castle and placed on the grass of the Castle Chapter.
What royal traditions can we expect at the funeral?
As part of the state funeral of a monarch, a gun carriage may be used to transport the coffin from one location to another. Royal family members are also required to wear black all the time, as well as mourning bands.
The Queen’s funeral will be the tenth state funeral in the UK since 1901. Winston Churchill was the last British monarch to receive a state funeral before Queen Elizabeth II.
Prior to his death, Prince Philip was offered a state funeral, but declined it. He was instead given a royal ceremony funeral, the same as Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
Where will the Queen be buried?
At Windsor’s King George VI Memorial Chapel, the Queen will be buried with her mother and father and her sister, Princess Margaret’s ashes. This is where the coffin of Prince Philip will be moved to be buried with his wife.
