Arranging a Funeral

When someone dies it is a very emotional and trying time for everyone.

Who do I call? What do we do now?

We suggest you call us first

01492 544797 or 07940 230664

We will help you every step of the way

We will talk you through registering the death, what happens if the coroner is involved with the funeral and any other questions you may have.

We always have a funeral director available to talk to families, also we will take as much of the burden on ourselves so you can collect your thoughts and prepare for the days ahead.

Tell Us Once

When someone has died, there are a lot of things to do, at a time when most of us don’t feel like doing them. One of these is to contact government departments and local council services that need to be informed. North Wales’ councils are providing a service that we hope will simplify things.

Download the leaflet for more information.

Registering a Death

People who have a legal responsibility to register a death include:

  • A Relative.
  • A person present at the death.
  • The occupier of the premises where the death occurred if he/she knew of it happening.
  • The person arranging the funeral (this does not include the funeral director).

What information is required when registering a death?

When you attend your appointment to register a death, please ensure you take the following information with you:

  • The medical certificate issued by the doctor treating the final illness of the person who died. Without this certificate the Registrar will not be able to register the death. If the Coroner has been involved the Coroner’s Office will advise you what to do.
  • The deceased person’s birth certificate or passport. This is not essential but can be helpful.
  • The deceased person’s medical card. Again, this is not essential but is helpful if it can be produced.

What will happen at the appointment?

A Registrar of Births and Deaths will talk to you privately at the Register Office and will ask you for:

  • The date and place of death.
  • The full name and surname of the deceased person (and the maiden surname if the deceased was a married woman).
  • The date and place of birth.
  • The occupation of the deceased and if the deceased person was a married woman, the full name and occupation of her husband.
  • The date of birth of the surviving husband or wife if the deceased person was married.
  • Whether or not the person who died was receiving a pension from public funds.

Once the registration has been completed, the Registrar will ask you to check that all the details are correct before signing the Register. You should check the information carefully before signing.  Once you have signed the record, the Registrar will give you the documentation listed in the next section below:

Documents You Will Receive at the Appointment

  • A “green form” called the ‘Registrar’s Certificate for Burial and Cremation’ which will allow you to arrange the funeral. There is no charge for this form. Where the Coroner is involved a different procedure may apply.
  • A form for Social Security purposes. There is no charge for this form.
  • A certified copy of the entry in the Register (a death certificate) may be provided at a cost of £11 if required.

When a Death is Reported to a Coroner

  • A doctor may report the death to a coroner if:
  • the cause of death is unknown
  • the death was violent or unnatural
  • the death was sudden and unexplained
  • the person who died was not visited by a medical practitioner during their final illness
  • the medical certificate is not available
  • the person who died was not seen by the doctor who signed the medical certificate within 14 days before death or after they died
  • the death occurred during an operation or before the person came out of anaesthetic
  • the medical certificate suggests the death may have been caused by an industrial disease or industrial poisoning

The coroner may decide that the cause of death is clear. In this case:

  • The doctor signs a medical certificate.
  • You take the medical certificate to the registrar.
  • The coroner issues a certificate to the registrar stating a post-mortem is not needed.

Post Mortems

To find out how the person died, the coroner may decide a post-mortem is needed. This can be done either in a hospital or mortuary. You cannot object to a coroner’s post-mortem – but if you have asked the coroner must tell you (and the person’s GP) when and where the examination will take place.

After the post-mortem:

  1. The coroner will release the body for a funeral once they have completed the post-mortem examinations and no further examinations are needed.
  2. If the body is released with no inquest, the coroner will send a form (‘Pink Form – form 100B’) to the registrar stating the cause of death.
  3. If the body is to be cremated, the coroner will also send a ‘Certificate of Coroner – form Cremation 6’.

If the coroner decides to hold an inquest:

A coroner must hold an inquest if the cause of death is still unknown, or if the person:

  • possibly died a violent or unnatural death
  • died in prison or police custody

You cannot register the death until after the inquest. The coroner is responsible for sending the relevant paperwork to the registrar.
The death cannot be registered until after the inquest, but the coroner can give you a certificate to prove the person is dead. When the inquest is over the coroner will tell the registrar what to put in the register.

Having never needed the services of a funeral director before, I knew how important it was to find someone who was not only caring and respectful, but also able to bring a gentle warmth to such a difficult time. We truly could not have chosen better than Dewi and Sam. From the very first moment Dewi stepped into our home — filled with family (and there were many of us!) — it felt as though he had known us for years. He immediately put us at ease. Whenever emotions became overwhelming, he would naturally pause, giving us the time and space we needed to gather ourselves, always checking that we were okay before continuing. He guided us through every step of the process with patience and clarity, keeping us fully informed and ensuring nothing ever felt confusing or rushed. While Chris was in his care, I felt completely reassured knowing he was being treated with the utmost dignity and respect. That peace of mind meant everything, I knew without doubt that we had chosen the very best people to look after my husband. On the day of the funeral, everything went smoothly. Dewi and his team were calm, attentive, and impeccably professional throughout. He gently explained what was happening and when, which brought us huge comfort and allowed us to focus on remembering Chris. Thank you, Dewi and Sam. Your kindness, compassion, and professionalism were extraordinary. You even managed to bring moments of warmth and lightness when we needed them most. You made an incredibly painful and exhausting time far us more bearable, and for that we will always be grateful.

We recently lost my Dad unexpectedly, he was just 51 years old. Losing Dad so young has been the hardest time we have experienced as a family, but Dewi’s support from that first phone call has been unbelievable. The respect & care Dewi & Sam have given our family was more than we could’ve wished for and the respect he showed Dad was so comforting. Nothing was too much for them, and they took all the pressure away and made sure the funeral arrangements and everything that goes with it was as easy as possible. They are a true credit and we could not recommend them highly enough. Thank you so much.

Dewi, Sam, celebrant Trystan and the whole team were wonderful. Compassionate, caring, professional and very organised. Our Mum was well looked after in their care and they treated the whole family with respect, compassion and patience while we prepared for her funeral. The preparations and funeral ran like clockwork, everything was taken care of by the team from flowers, photo tribute, service, celebration of life venue, charity collection, streaming service. We knew Mum would be in safe hands with Dewi and the team as they had looked after my Dads funeral 2 years ago. What better recommendation than trusting both our parent’s funerals to Dewi Glyn Jones.

As a family, we were meant to write this review a couple of years ago, but time somehow slipped by. Today, after witnessing Dewi conduct a friend’s funeral, it brought back so many memories and reminded me that I never got round to sharing just how grateful we are. We cannot thank Dewi and Sam enough for the kindness, care and compassion they showed us when we lost our mother two Christmases ago. Dewi had cared for our nanna a few years earlier, so when the time came to say goodbye to mum, we knew without hesitation that he was the person we could trust. That familiarity brought us comfort at a time when everything felt overwhelming. Losing mum so close to Christmas made an already painful time even harder, yet Dewi and Sam worked tirelessly to make sure her funeral could take place before Christmas Day. In just eight days, everything was arranged with calm, professionalism and sensitivity. Throughout the entire process, nothing was ever too much trouble. No question, phone call or message felt insignificant, and they made sure we felt supported and reassured every step of the way. They also recommended a celebrant to lead the service, who was absolutely wonderful. Maria (Rimmer) was warm, down to earth, and took the time to truly get to know us in such a short space of time, which meant the service felt personal, meaningful and a true reflection of mum. At one of the hardest moments in our lives, Dewi and Sam treated us with genuine care and humanity, and for that we will always be thankful. I wouldn’t hesitate to use their services again and would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone needing compassionate, trusted support during such a difficult time. Thank you

On behalf of myself, my dad, my sister, and all of my Mum’s family and friends, we want to sincerely thank Dewi and Sam for the incredible care and support they gave us. They truly went above and beyond, nothing was ever too much trouble, and every detail was handled with thoughtfulness and care. Mum looked beautifully peaceful, and the flowers were absolutely stunning. Dewi and Sam made a very difficult time a little easier, and we’re so grateful for their kindness, compassion, and professionalism throughout.

I'm not quite sure if this is the place to leave a review for a funeral director but I feel compelled to given the level of service that I received. This year we have had the sad misfortune to lose 2 wonderful people from our lives, suddenly and unexpectedly, firstly in January and then again in April. From the very second that we met Dewi and his team we felt like we were being comforted, guided and looked after by people who knew what loss meant, who knew what emotions were flowing through at the moment and every moment after, I actually said at one point if we were to look at a dictionary of the definition of compassion there would be a picture of Dewi, as a family we can't thank the entire team enough for everything that they have done this year for us all, it's a very big decision choosing who you want to be looking after your nearest family members after they have passed away, I'm just so grateful that we were able to find Dewi, Sam and everyone else on their dedicated team to help us during the distress and the maze of legal responsibility during a grieving time. Our families will be forever grateful to this exceptional man, his wife and everyone else who epitomises care, compassion, dedication to service and support at their office. Thank you Dewi

My mum sadly saw her final sunset on 3rd September and was wonderfully cared for by Dewi, Sam and team. Mum had some very specific requests including which clothes, and especially socks (“shh I’m watching the cricket”), she wanted to be buried in, all of which were faithfully honoured. The funeral was handled with dignity, tact and compassion with consideration given to the feelings and beliefs of different family members. Nothing was too much trouble and we were helped every step of the way.

On the worst day of my life when my partner died someone suggested Dewi jones funeral directors. I'm so glad they did as Dewi and Sam both made the most difficult thing iv ever had to do easier. They were friendly considerate and made my family and me feel safe and comfortable in our grief. If I ever find anyone in the same state as I was I would definitely recommend using Dewl . Thank you for everything Dewl x
